The GA4 data model is brilliant, but the interface leaves something to be desired.
- Free to set-up: The BigQuery export is free and gives you access to all of the underlying raw data GA4 uses.
- Data limits: You only get 14 months of raw data at max. That's not enough for serious business. In BigQuery it's unlimited.
- Exploration limits: It's hard easily create specific conversions or custom dimensions. With the raw data there are no limits on what you can pull together.
- Fixing bad data: It's hard (or impossible) to retroactively fix data and filter out spam. With BigQuery you can filter out spam and fix those bad campaign tags or conversion events.

Hows is this different to the GA4 interface?
We're building off the raw data here.
Reading both of our other product pages might help explain this more, but a quick summary here.
Raw data means all the data.- The data is in your warehouse, it won't sample, won't expire and never be taken away.
- The interface also builds off the raw data, but only allows you a very limited scope of how you can customise that.
When you're working through the interface you're trapped into how GA4 thinks you want to work.
As you might've seen from the public opinion of GA4, many people would argue they didn't do the best job.
But the underlying data model is really strong and GA4 BigQuery lets you take advantage of that. We've built a product to help people take advantage of the power in the raw BigQuery export.
- Convert the raw data: First we conver the raw data into the formats you recognise, like a table with sessions or users.
- Enrich the data: Rather than filtering the data we want to enrich it. We want to let you add additional session dimensions, help you classify your users into groups and build a strong base. Then the filtering can happen in the BI tool.
- Saving money: There is a lot of complexity in creating some of these metrics, particularly if you want to do it in a cost efficient manner. We've built all models with years of experience so you can get the complex functionality without expensive queries.
Is your Looker Studio connector the same as the default GA4 Looker Studio connector?
No. They default one builds off the API data like the GA4 interface.
This inherits all of the problems with the GA4 interface.
Our Looker Studio connector builds off the raw BigQuery export, so you get all the data advantages we've created.
How easy is the set-up?
You should be able to get the basics set-up in 15 minutes.
Although if you have a really large site and have been storing GA4 in BigQuery since launch, the initial start-up operations can take 30 minutes - 60 minutes to process.
Getting a fully customised with sessions dimensions, user properties etc. Will take a bit longer, probably several hours to explore, test and settle what you're happy with.
Can you join this with other data sources?
Yes we provide all the default GA4 IDs for client, user, session etc. so if you have those ID's pushed into any other data sources then they can be easily joined together.
